As a ghostwriter, I am hired to write a number of content pieces for clients such as blog posts, non-fiction books (like memoirs), personal newsletters, speeches and more. Ghostwriters can either write alongside their clients as co-writers or collaborators, or fully take on the writing work, with the client only giving feedback or direction. The primary credit goes to the client once the writing is done. In some cases, secondary credit can also be given to the ghostwriter.
Why do people hire ghostwriters?
Most people hire ghostwriters because they either don’t have the time to write their own content or do not have the necessary writing skills needed to create a compelling story or written work. Ghostwriting isn’t limited to publishing – the music industry is built on ghostwriters who write songs for other artists, too!
Who are some of the well-known people that have used ghostwriters/writing collaborators?
Barack Obama (and his chief speechwriter Jon Favreau).
Cicely Tyson, Alicia Keys, Simone Biles, Toni Braxton (who all acknowledge collaborating with Michelle Burford).
Bonang Matheba (for her memoir “From A to B: The Bonang Matheba story”, which was co-written by Gugu Mhlungu).
Sir Richard Branson (for his autobiography “Losing My Virginity”, which he acknowledges Edward Whitley).
